The Toronto Caribbean Carnival is a historic annual event. This year, it will begin on 28th July. It will end on 1st August as per the conventional dates. Some other History and Facts
The Caribbean community in Ontario has given a special flavour to this festival since 1967. It got the name Caribana as a result. The official name became the Toronto Caribbean Carnival from 2015 onwards. The primary inspiration could be the yearly pre-Lenten Carnival in Trinidad. This takes three weeks in total. There are delicious food items on offer. There are several folk traditions here as well. Groups take part from Central and South America. Other groups come from Africa, Haiti and the Bahamas.
They have been coming from the 1980s. Indigenous and instrumental music is a big draw. Dance, oral performances and masquerades also take place. Some of the big attractions include parties or fetes and a lot more. The Toronto Caribbean Carnival is the official name for several events. The organisers are the Committee for Festival Management. The Organization of Calypso Performing Artistes also holds the annual Calypso Monarch Competition. The Caribana Arts Group owns the trademark as well. The Grand Parade takes place as a part of this festival. It begins from the Canadian National Exhibition spot. It will go on till Lakeshore Boulevard. Music is a crucial part of the Grand Parade as well. Other forms include reggae, cadence, tassa drumming and Zuk. The J’Ouvert Parade is another kick-off with the Parade. It draws inspiration from the carnivalesque tradition. The place puts more emphasis on rhythms and music instead of actual songs.
