Qantas has announced plans to fly between Melbourne and the Indonesian capital Jakarta from later this year.

A thrice-weekly service is set to launch on April 16, 2023, operated by the carrier’s A330 aircraft.

The new route will join Qantas’ existing Sydney-Jakarta service, increasing the carrier’s seat capacity to Indonesia’s capital by more than 6,600 seats per day.

To celebrate the new route Qantas is offering a special fare starting from A$899 return, available until February 7, 2023 “unless sold out prior”.

Melbourne-Jakarta will be the third new Qantas international route from the southeastern Australian city since borders reopened, following the launch of routes to Delhi and Dallas.

Qantas to launch nonstop Melbourne-Dallas route

Note that Qantas had been due to launch flights between Perth and Jakarta late last year, but the route was scrapped shortly before launch.

Commenting on the news Qantas’ domestic and international CEO Andrew David said:

“Victoria is an incredibly important part of our network and we’re seeing strong demand for travel to and from Melbourne.

“We expect these flights to be popular with Victoria’s large Indonesian expat community wanting to visit family and friends back home as well as offering a new gateway for travellers looking to explore the region.

“Indonesia is a rapidly growing economy and home to more than 270 million people. As one of Australia’s closest neighbours, these new flights will also help support the growing trade and investment links between our two countries.

“We’d like to thank the Victorian Government and Melbourne Airport for their support and collaboration on the launch of this new route.”

In other news Qantas has launched a flash sale promotion with up to 35 per cent of 170,000 seats on international routes.

A few of the highlighted fares include Melbourne – London from $1,699 return, Melbourne – Singapore from $759 return, Sydney – Los Angeles from $1,299 return, and Brisbane – Singapore from $759 return.

Again the promotion runs until February 7 “unless sold out prior”.
