Company: Inverness Design Build Group Ltd.
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Peter Locke, president at Inverness Design Build Group Ltd., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in real estate design, construction and development.
Following coursework at York University in Toronto, Mr. Locke completed a two-year program in construction management and residential construction with George Brown College in Toronto. He has excelled as a leading design-build contractor in Toronto, the Virgin Islands and New Jersey for four decades.
As president of Peter C. Locke and Associates from 1982 to 1995, Mr. Locke and his group completed over 250 projects with as many as 35 projects a year throughout the 1990’s, adept at both the design and construction practice, designing most projects but also on projects designed by notable architects including Tom Sprague, Armstrong Molesworth and Sheppard Architects and Sasha Milenov.
As president of the Inverness Hotel Corporation from 1998 to 2007, Mr. Locke oversaw the Chenay Bay Beach Resort, a 50- room beachfront property on 30 acres on St. Croix’s east end. The resort included both a busy hotel operation as well as a very successful vacation ownership program and was awarded RCI Gold Crown Resort status for excellence in guest experience, and that year was the only property of 13 resorts in the U.S. Virgin Islands to attain the award. Mr. Locke further prospered as owner of the Virgin Islands Design Build Group, LLC in St. Croix from 2007 to 2011, the managing partner of The Residences at Banyan Hill, a 29-lot residential development on St. Croix’s east end. Banyan Hill offered 5 different models, meticulously designed by the award-winning Scott Architects of Orlando and Gluckstein Design Planning of Toronto.
Since 2012, Mr. Locke has found much success as president of Edgewater Design Build Group LLC in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, focusing on hurricane re-construction in and around the Tom’s River and Jersey shore area, as well as Inverness Design Build Group Ltd., which concentrates on residential design-build for additions, custom homes and renovations in the Toronto area.
Mr. Locke credits much of his success to his father Charles, who tirelessly promoted him everywhere. He also hired a great public relations firm, but he attributes his smooth entry into renovation and construction work for high end clients, including the award-winning actor, Eugene Levy, mainly to his father’s tireless support. The level of comfort and trust he has built with people he’s worked with and signed contracts with has likewise been critical to his success. He enjoys engaging with people and having a good relationship with them.
Mr. Locke became involved in his profession because he wanted to follow the professional and entrepreneurial path of his father, whom he considers as his best friend. The latter was an accomplished developer as well as a board member of a home builders’ organization in Toronto, Canada. He looked up to him, not only for his business savviness, but also because he was a wonderfully supportive parent. At his father’s suggestion, he studied construction management in college. Upon graduation, he became an adviser for the program before beginning his career as a construction superintendent for the largest publicly traded real estate development company in North America at the time.
As his career highlights, Mr. Locke cites his completion of more than 300 projects from 1982 to 1996, including hurricane reconstruction work in the United States Virgin Islands, one of his favorite places. He also perceives the Chenay Bay Beach Resort project as another highlight in his career. Out of the 13 resorts in the islands, it was the only property that earned RCI Gold Crown Resort status for its excellence in providing superb guest experience. Mr. Locke was only 31 when he purchased the property. It was also when he learned the most about humility, civility and looking out for people. In addition, acquiring and developing the high-end Buccaneer Beach and Golf Resort in St. Croix was a great moment in his career, which is part of the list of the top 50 resorts in the world.
In the coming years, Mr. Locke plans to return to the United States Virgin Islands to build 80 houses and implement construction management for the youth in the area. He has shared his plans with the governor and the head of the senate, and both are very supportive and ready to help.
